It’s that time of year again where we start looking back at what went well (and not so well) last year and figuring out how to bring those lessons into the new year with a new set of goals and plans.
Today, we’re going to talk about turning those goals into reality through a structured and effective plan. During our “Goal Setting Power Hour” in 2023, we discussed how to make this happen, and I’m excited to share the key takeaways with you.
Before moving on, be sure to download the free Goal Setting Workbook. Just fill out the form on this page and we’ll send it your way so you can start implementing what you learn here today!
Understanding the Process
Our journey begins with setting a clear and tangible goal, what we like to call the ‘STAR Goal’. This goal is Specific, Time-bound, Actionable, and Relevant. It’s not just about saying, “I want to make more money.” It’s about being precise – for example, aiming to earn $100,000 by the end of the year while working four days a week.
Breaking Down the Goal
Once we have our STAR Goal, it’s time to break it down into manageable chunks. We do this by setting quarterly checkpoints. These checkpoints help us track our progress and ensure we’re on the right path. For each quarter, we establish smaller, monthly projects that contribute to the larger goal.
For instance, if your goal is to increase your client base, your first quarter could focus on enhancing your website’s SEO in month one, building your email marketing strategy during month two, and expanding your local network in the third month.
Now, to make the monthly projects more manageable, we can break them down even further to weekly tasks. Each week, you’ll have specific tasks that align with your monthly project, ensuring consistent progress towards your quarterly checkpoint (and helping you never sit down at the computer again with no clue what you’re going to do to grow your business on any given day).
The Importance of Alignment – Your “North Star”
A crucial aspect of this process is alignment. Every task, project, and checkpoint must align with your overall goal. This alignment ensures that every effort you make contributes meaningfully to your end goal.
Adapting and Adjusting
The journey to reaching your goal isn’t always a straight line. It’s essential to regularly review your progress and adapt your strategy as needed. This flexibility allows you to overcome challenges and seize new opportunities that align with your goal.
Implementation
To implement this framework, start by downloading our “Goal Setting Workbook”. It’s linked here on this page (and it’s free).
In the workbook you’ll start by clearly defining your STAR Goal. Then, you’ll break it down into quarterly checkpoints, monthly projects, and weekly tasks. Remember, the key to success is ensuring alignment with that “North Star” at every step and being open to adjustments as life throws curveballs your way.
Wrap it up, Chris
By following this structured approach, you can turn your ambitious goals into a reality. It’s not just about working hard; it’s about working smart, with a clear and focused plan. So, set your STAR Goal, break it down, and start your journey toward success today!
